Inspiring the next generation at Women in Computing 2024
The Women in Computing event took place on 11th December 2024 at St George’s School in Edinburgh. The aim was to inspire young women to pursue careers in technology. We were delighted to be part of this hands-on event, working to bridge the gender gap in computing by motivating the next generation.
The event saw participation from over 600 students from local schools, aged 9 to 14. All activities were designed to engage and inspire young women interested in technology across three main pathways – lead, code and innovate – allowing students to explore different aspects of the tech industry. Three of Storm’s women attended this event. We focussed on non-coding roles, discussing with the students:
- how the structure of a website can be created and tested using user insight and data
- how digital solutions can support public services
- the diverse skillsets that make up different roles in a digital transformation team.
“We really enjoyed being part of this inspiring event and sharing our passion for technology with the next generation of women in computing.”
Addressing the need for women in computing
In Scotland, access to Computing Science education remains a challenge and the gender gap in the field is significant. Women are under-represented in the technology sector. For us, participating in events like this plays a crucial role in breaking down barriers and showcasing the diverse and exciting opportunities available in tech.
"Initiatives like Women in Computing help inspire girls and young women."
A collaborative effort for future innovation
The success of Women in Computing is a testament to the collaborative efforts of industry leaders, educators and students. By working together, we can create a supportive environment where young women feel empowered to pursue their passions in technology.
"The entire audience was girls."
We hope to have inspired young women at this event and to help shape a future where the tech industry reflects the diversity of our world.
